Definition #
The work that only the group can win or lose — not the work any individual can win or lose alone. A real team is defined by outcomes that cannot be produced by individuals working in parallel. If the win can be claimed by one person, it wasn’t team work. If the loss can be pinned on one person, it wasn’t team work. [Real Team Work] names the category of outcomes that only exist when the group operates as one organism. Most rosters never produce a single instance of [Real Team Work] in a year. The leadership team that runs the operation has to produce it every shift.

Placement Canon-level teaching. Lives across the entire book. Anchor teaching likely in People fundamental (the discipline of building the team) with reinforcement in Perspective (the operator’s read of what a team actually is) and Performance (the shift-level outcomes that prove team integrity). Diagnostic deployment open — fits naturally wherever the book examines whether an operation is running a real team or a roster. Homework Take the last seven days of operation. List five outcomes — wins, losses, mixed. For each, ask: can this be traced to one person? If yes, it wasn’t team work. If every outcome on the list traces to an individual, the operation is running a roster, not a team. The work begins by naming what’s true — then designing the operation so that the most important outcomes can only be jointly won or lost by the team.
