Why Behind the Thinking #
[One More Pass] is what separates the operator who builds something durable from the operator who picks the first acceptable answer and ships mediocrity. The discipline of one-more-pass is the engine behind durable IP and durable operations — the work keeps getting better because the operator never treats “good enough” as done while the work is still open. It sits between two failure modes: pre-ship paralysis (endless passes, never ships — Voltaire’s “perfect is the enemy of the good” names this trap) and post-ship complacency (first acceptable answer, calls it done). The line sits on the standard, not on the pass — [One More Pass] is not perfectionism, it is refusing to let “acceptable” pass for “done” while the work is still alive. The operator never accepts the current version as final while the work is still alive.
